About

We believe that  the Suffolk branch of the TOMCC has been established some 40 years ago, please find below a little dig into our history.

We have around 150 members and the branch is run by a small enthusiastic committee. We strongly encourage member participation and suggestions are always welcome.

We offer friendship, ride-outs, social events, help and advice on owning and riding Triumphs and opportunities to get involved if you want to. We organise trips to shows, provide info about events and rallies, have an annual pub quiz against the Harley Drivers and of course, our big one: We have a stand at the Copdock Show, and many of our members regularly take trips abroad. Given that Suffolk is a big county and our reach is into Essex, Cambridgeshire and Norfolk as well, we :

- have a FB and a WhatsApp group via which members can arrange ride outs to the bike shows and locations we put into the calendar.

- organise a Travelling HQ on the 4th Tuesday of the month during summer

- as well as Start and End of Season lunches on a Saturday

to enable everybody to join us at one point.

We have quite a few female riders and we encourage family and friends to accompany our riders at our meets and events as pillion or on their own bikes (if those are non-Triumphs, they may need to be prepared for a bit of banter, though). And most importantly: It's not mandatory to show up on bike all the time. You have to have a Triumph motorcycle to become an official member of the branch, but branch life is about the meet and mingle, not the metal!

So, pop along at one of our meets and itroduce yourself, we'd love to meet you.

Our History as far as we know it

The TOMCC Times Past articles in Nacelle (our monthly magazine) mention of the formation of a new Ipswich branch in January 1974.

According to the articles in the past few editions, by 1978 there was neither an Ipswich or Suffolk branch, so presumably the first Ipswich branch was short lived. The next indirect reference is in April 1980 when Suffolk was mentioned as one of the areas where TOMCC members could get emergency breakdown assistance from other TOMCC members. This doesn’t of course mean that there was an active branch in the area at the time and indeed, there is no mention of an Ipswich or Suffolk branch in the list of branches at the end of 1980. There are no references to the existence of a branch in 1981 or in the branches list from January 1982 but by the end of 1983 an Ipswich branch reappears in the list, presumably then being resurrected sometime during 1982/83.

Information then trickles away. We would love to know if anyone has any recollections that can help fill in the gaps? Possibly a partially cross-over could link with the rise and fall of the Colchester branch? There has always been strong overlap between North Essex and SouthSuffolk. A Colchester branch was established in 1981.

One of our members was a member of that branch from the outset. He states: "It very quickly grew and I remember the car park at The Donkey and Buskin at Layer De La Haye on the outskirts of Colchester being full of bike on branch meeting nights. Quite a few people I remember who were affiliated with the branch came down from Suffolk. For reasons I can’t recall the branch seemed to fold as quickly as it started and I can’t recall much, if anything, after about 1984. However, in 1983 both Colchester and Ipswich branches existed, so I wonder if the existence of the Colchester branch contributed to the re establishment of the Suffolk branch?"

Do get in touch with your stories, please!
